Illinois Fourth District Democratic Congressman Luis Gutierrez reportedly withdrew his endorsement of neighboring incumbent Democratic Congressman Dan Lipinski (District 3) today. Lipinski, son of a long-time congressman of the same name, has received criticism for favoring President Bush’s agenda at the expense of 3rd District Democrats. Dan Lipinski also has supported discriminatory anti-immigrant policies. Lipinski faces a strong progressive challenge from Democrat Mark Pera.

I want to congratulate Congressman Gutierrez. As a naturalized citizen I despise Lipinki’s ignorance of Latino immigrants in his district and the fact that he would criminalize priests, doctors, neighbors, etc for interacting with people who are undocumented. (Sensenbrennber bill HR 4437). Lipinski is also pro-life and got the congressional position cause his daday helped him.

While we may well disagree on other aspects of this – I hope we don’t disagree that someone who happens to be a French immigrant deserves better treatment than someone who happens to be a Latino immigrant.
Take a look at the link.
As the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said (even if it may have exhibited more compassion here than elsewhere):
“[S]pokeswoman Gail Montenegro…said.
‘But the fact remains that Ms. Turcinovic has been residing in the U.S. without authorization since August of 2004,’ she said. ‘And we’re required to enforce the nation’s laws without regard to an individual’s ability to generate media attention.’”
Like I said Robert, we may disagree on immigration – but surely you’re not arguing against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that people of French descent deserve consideration not given to those of Latino descent? I’m highly sympathetic to Ms. Turcinovic and others in her situation – and would have the laws changed – but if it wasn’t about her being French than what was the basis (since similar circumstances haven’t stopped Latinos from deportation)?
